We were delighted to return the favor and do a guest post for Fine Rugs of Charleston<\/a>. \u00a0Check them both out as some of the images are different!!<\/p>\n

We thought it might be fun to touch on some of the more intimidating parts of desiging your home. \u00a0Some of those purchases that make you lose sleep. \u00a0You’ve bought a new house. \u00a0Or perhaps you are sprucing up one that you’ve had for a while. \u00a0What are you going to do with those floors? \u00a0This very question has been plaguing homeowners for ages. \u00a0Today, we are happy to provide you with the perfect solution: call your interior designer and head on down to a local rug shop. \u00a0(For us, Fine Rugs of Charleston is literally a stone’s throw away!) \u00a0I know what you’re thinking….’Of course you would say that. \u00a0You’re biased.’ \u00a0Well, yes, perhaps we are but it works! \u00a0Rugs are no small thing and they carry a lot of weight in the design of your home. \u00a0Few things can kill a design more than the wrong rug.<\/p>\n

We came up with a little Q&A to get you thinking. \u00a0(Note: This is not an actual client but more a blend of 25 years of MDI clients. \u00a0Now that’s a lot of experience at your disposal.)<\/p>\n

Client:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>I just invested in these beautiful hardwood floors. \u00a0Do I have to put rugs down?<\/p>\n

MDI:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Yes! \u00a0For so very many reasons!<\/p>\n

1. Houses echo. \u00a0Getting some rugs down will help cut down on the echo in your \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0house and especially those second floor stompers.<\/p>\n

2. Delineating areas. \u00a0Particularly with the open nature of many floorplans these days,\u00a0rugs are one of the most effective means of grounding the various areas of a house.<\/p>\n

3. Rugs are beautiful. \u00a0Rugs are a critical element of an MDI interior. \u00a0You can add color and life…..<\/p>\n

5. You wouldn’t go to dinner without shoes on….rugs are like the footwear layer of your house.<\/p>\n

Client:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>How do I know what kind of rug to get?<\/p>\n

MDI:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>We will answer that with some questions. \u00a0Once we’ve worked with a client on the overall design of a space, these questions will help us guide you to the right rug.<\/p>\n

1. What kind of traffic will the room receive?<\/p>\n

2. Do you have pets or kids? \u00a0Just trying to get a feel for your lifestyle.<\/p>\n

3. Do you have an idea of your budget?<\/p>\n

Client:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>My room is huge and I’m afraid I can’t find a rug that large. \u00a0Or in the case of the image below, the client fell in love with a rug that wasn’t the right size.<\/p>\n

MDI:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Take it in phases. \u00a0Maybe start with a lower layer like a seagrass (or a seagrass like wool blend if you don’t like the feel of seagrass) and then top it with a decorative layer.<\/p>\n

Client:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Furniture on or off?<\/p>\n

\u00a0MDI:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>There is no universal, hard and fast rule. \u00a0However, we do tend to have some generalities that we consider first.<\/p>\n

Bedroom: Rug should stop just short of the bedside tables.<\/p>\n

Living Room: Rugs should encompass the furniture. \u00a0All four legs of that chair on the rug, please. \u00a0There are CERTAINLY exceptions. \u00a0Even some on our website. \u00a0But this is the general rule.<\/p>\n

Client:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>My room is a funny shape<\/p>\n

MDI:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>This is the perfect time to collaborate with someone like Fine Rugs and have them custom bind a rug for you. \u00a0Goods that come in rolls are a wonderful solution for this dilemma. \u00a0Usually, we have Fine Rugs meet us onsite and we measure off the wall perhaps 6-12″ and have the rug cut to fit the room. \u00a0There are so many little nuances to each space which is my this custom solution is such a polished look.<\/p>\n
